Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service veteran Ronnie Wright has spoken of his shock after being awarded the British Empire Medal.

Dedicating 44 years to the service, Wright was recognised in the New Year Honours for his efforts in championing firefighter safety and enhancing his local community.

Surprised by the news, Ronnie said: "When I opened the letter, I was totally taken aback.

"I just come to work and do my job and hope that at the end of the day you go home leaving someone in a better place than when you turned up.

"To receive something like this is breathtaking."

Serving as the Fleet Technical Officer, he ensures the service is equipped with the best vehicles and gear to keep his colleagues and the county's residents safe.

Outside of his duties, 65-year-old Ronnie has gone above and beyond, serving as an on-call firefighter for 25 years.

Chief Fire Officer, Graeme Binning, said: "I am delighted that Ronnie has been recognised in this year's New Year's Honours List.

"On behalf of everyone at Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service I wish him our warmest congratulations."

Also extending congratulations, Leader of the Council, Glen Sanderson deemed it "wonderful news," describing Ronnie as a "true community hero."
