A new year cash injection is set to help young people improve the environment of the region.

Young people across Newcastle, Northumberland and North Tyneside will lead plans to enhance the environment following a funding boost from the Blue Influencers Scheme, which has awarded the Northumberland Wildlife Trust £20,000 annually for three years.

The grant will fund a Blue Mentor, responsible for recruiting 10 to 14-year-olds as 'Blue Influencers'.

These young people will devise and run social action schemes to enhance the environment of their schools, neighbourhoods and communities.

The scheme was conceived by UK outdoor education charity, The Ernest Cook Trust, with the aim of enabling young people from marginalised communities, particularly those residing in deprived coastal, estuary and riverside areas, to address environmental and climatic issues.

Liz Heard, acting wild city manager for Northumberland Wildlife Trust, said: "We’re thrilled to be joining the Blue Influencer Scheme.

"Young people in the north east are passionate about protecting our oceans and cleaning up our waterways."

The Ernest Cook Trust's chief executive, Ed Ikin, said: "Young people are often the most passionate about the environment.

"The Blue Influencers Scheme will give them the funding, platform and tools they need to make positive changes to benefit their entire community."
