TRAGEDY struck twice on Sunday evening when two people died in two separate incidents on Tynedale's roads.
Northumbria Police are investigating both crashes which have been labelled "devastating".
Police were alerted to the first incident before 6.40pm, where they found a 'one-vehicle collision' involving a grey BMW on Ward Lane, near Wark.
Police said that it is believed that the car had been travelling in a westerly direction, west of the B6320, between Nunwick and Ladyhill when, for reasons yet to be established, the vehicle came off the road and overturned.
The driver, a man in his 40s, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger – also in her 40s – was taken to hospital for treatment with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
Officers from Northumbria Police’s Roads Policing Unit are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
Sergeant Michael Parnaby, of Northumbria Police, said: “This was a tragic incident where sadly a man has lost his life.
“We continue to offer support to their loved ones as they process what has happened."
Just hours later, at around 11.35pm, police were alerted to another incident, on the A69 at Haltwhistle, between the junction with the B6322 and Melkridge.
The crash is reported to have involved two vehicles - a grey Audi A1 and a white Ford Transit van - and a pedestrian.
Police said that the vehicles, travelling westbound, struck the male pedestrian on the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sergeant Andy McNally, of Northumbria Police, said: “First and foremost, I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the man’s family following this devastating incident.
“A number of enquiries are underway as we try to establish what has happened in the moments leading up to the collision."
Northumbria Police are investigating both incidents, and would like to hear from anyone in the area who may have witnessed the vehicles or may have dashcam footage.
“Your information, no matter how small it may seem, could prove to be really valuable,” Sgt McNally added.
The next of kin of both deceased have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.
