Chair of Ovingham Parish Council, Doreen Jordan, said: "This was a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the families. The river banks in Ovingham are a popular area for youngsters to gather from Easter and throughout the summer months to meet with their friends, many of them being from much further afield.
"They don't understand how dangerous swimming in the river is and need to be warned of this, both by parents and in schools. Signage pointing out the dangers and safety equipment should be put in place at intervals along the river banks in Ovingham and checked on a regular basis."
