THE anniversary of D-Day will be marked in Hexham with a free event.

Organised by Hexham Town Council with Hexham Community Partnership, it will mark the 80tj anniversary of the Normandy landings on June 6.

The event will begin with a proclamation by the town crier at 8am on the Abbey flags.

Various bands will perform in the evening, before the lighting of a beacon and a closing singalong after 9pm.

"There will be a ‘Peal of Bells for Peace’ at 6.30pm to start the event in the marketplace, music and dancing beforehand with free teas and scones – until they run out. An official proclamation by our town crier will follow and we will light the Beacon on top of the Moot Hall at 9.15pm in line with others across the country.

"Eighty years is within memory of family lifetimes, and across the world, countries will be honouring D-Day and calling for Peace, which the world sadly needs at the moment – I hope that commemorating the sacrifices of so many will remind people why war is not the answer.

"All are welcome to join us on what will be a moving and timely, international event."
