Northumbrian Water’s fleet of tankers recently hit its million-litre milestone of Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuel, used to power the vehicles.

This renewable fuel usage results in a saving of approximately 2.5 million kgs of carbon dioxide (CO2) .

Following a 2021 trial, this biofuel was implemented across the Bioresources fleet in November 2022, and currently, 17 heavy-goods vehicles use HVO fuel.

Ben Connolly, Northumbrian Water Group's transport manager, said: "As we pivot towards a more sustainable future, the transition to alternative fuels has become critical, especially for fleet operators and we are very proud to have hit our millionth litre of HVO fuel.

"In an uncertain landscape of evolving fuel technologies, HVO fuel stands out as a vital component in facilitating this transition.

"It offers a number of benefits that satisfy both environmental and operational challenges and supports our commitment to Net Zero."
