NORTHUMBRIA Police have reinstated a dedicated new motorcycle unit after a 15-years since last in operation,

The unit is a blend of full-time and dual-role riders from the Roads Policing team.

Equipped with six bespoke, fully equipped bikes, they're ready for multiple situations whilst patrolling the region’s roads.

Superintendent David Pickett of Northumbria Police said: "We are all really excited to see the motorbikes on the roads, and the team have really hit the ground running supporting with a range of activity including the Force’s Operation Impact.

"We know our region’s roads are popular with riders, especially as you head into Northumberland and the coast, and we do expect this coming Bank Holiday to be busy."

From curbing criminal activity, attending motorcycle events, educational courses for safe riding and VIP escorting - their days will not be repetitive.

Showing support, Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, Susan Dungworth said: "Officers appreciate how bikes allow them to cover more of their patch too, which in turn means policing more efficiently.

"I am confident investing in this new unit will have a positive impact on Northumbria Police and the communities it serves."

Officers will be patrolling on BMW R 1250 RT and BMW F 800 GS motorcycles.
