Filming is set to begin for a dance project involving disabled children at a school in Hexham.

Taking place at Hexham Priory Special School, Breathing Space is a participatory dance project spearheaded by dance artist Susie Tate.

The project will build towards a dance film showcasing the children's ideas and progress, which will be shared with families, friends and the community.

The depiction of the students' experience will evolve as the project progresses and will highlight the students' diverse experiences.

Scheduled to premiere during the autumn term later this year, filming week will commence on June 10 and will last for four days.

Inspired by a previous film project, Swimming Upstream, the programme encourages engagement in the arts in rural areas with scarce arts provision.

Ms Tate's inclusive dance approach is aimed at cultivating the children's creativity while supporting physical and emotional health.

Staff training will diversify skills, enhancing their work with children and expanding the project's reach.

Alice Underwood, the filmmaker, trained as a dancer and will aim to "highlight the beauty of all movement however small or big it may be".

In addition to the school community, the film will be showcased at local events and venues in September and October.

These venues will include Priory School Academy partner schools, the Royal Victoria Infirmary children’s ward and at the hospital cinema as a header for longer films.
