Northumberland County Council is set to discuss an updated Climate Change Action Plan covering 2024 to 2026.

The Council’s Cabinet will discuss the plan, which outlines their progress on tackling climate change and sets more ambitious targets to secure a sustainable prospect for the county.

The refreshed plan expands on various key areas including heating, renewable energy, transport, natural carbon absorption, and waste.

It also looks into more comprehensive greenhouse gas reduction strategies, environmental protection efforts, and climate change adaptation measures.

The council is now exceeding its efforts beyond mere carbon dioxide reduction, factoring in new data and national trends.

This includes significant reduction initiatives for methane and nitrous oxide emissions, both largescale contributors to the county's greenhouse gas footprint.

An integral part of this approach seeks to preserve and enhance Northumberland’s natural environment.

This includes equipping front-line services to prevent littering and fly tipping, boost green areas and water quality, and endorse more active and sustainable modes of transport.

The updated plan also aims to assess how Northumberland can adapt to climate change impacts such as flood mitigation, coastal erosion, wildfires, and energy security threats.

Earlier this year, hundreds of homes in Northumberland were able to benefit from new home energy solutions thanks to government grant funding awarded to the county council.

The proposed Climate Change Action Plan builds upon its predecessor which ran from 2021 to 2023.
