A restaurant at Newcastle Airport has been nominated for a prestigious international award.
Aster & Thyme has been shortlisted for Airport Bar of the Year by Moodie Davitt Report's Airport Food and Beverage + Hospitality Awards.
It will compete against outlets at other airports such as Gatwick, Ontario, Bali, Hong Kong, and Dubai.
Travel food and beverage specialist SSP launched Aster & Thyme at Newcastle Airport earlier in 2024.
It is part of the airport’s £20m investment into enhancing passengers' experience.
The outlet flaunts a botanical themed interior design, marble and brass finishes and an over 130 per cent increase in size from the previous facility.
It offers patrons stunning views of the airfield through floor to ceiling windows, a well-stocked bar, and a menu showcasing local produce.
Kari Daniels, CEO of SSP UK & Ireland, said: "With vibrant décor and expansive views of the airfield, Aster & Thyme offers customers a memorable start to their holiday.
"It offers a premium experience, built around an eye-catching bar, serving a diverse range of beverages, many of which are from the North East, to offer a local flavour at an international airport."
Director of commercial at Newcastle Airport, Dean Ward, expressed delight over passengers' positive feedback about the establishment.
He said: "Feedback from passengers so far about Aster & Thyme has been fantastic.
"It is the perfect place to relax prior to your flight, offering exceptional views, excellent cocktail and drinks menus and delicious food options."
Mr Ward added:"We have a very close working relationship with SSP and this project has been no exception, it’s fantastic to see all of that hard work being rewarded with this international award nomination."
Newcastle Airport has undergone major upgrades to ensure passengers have a pleasant experience.
These include state-of-the-art security technology that allows passengers to keep all electronics and liquids in their hand luggage, and the addition of more local, gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian food options.
Newcastle Airport anticipates a bustling summer season, expecting to accommodate over 3.5 million passengers.
