A woman is in critical condition after she fell from a bridge yesterday afternoon on the A69 near Hexham.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At around 3.35pm on Wednesday, June 5, police received a report of concern for the welfare of a female on the A69 westbound, near to the Hexham exit.

“Emergency services attended the scene and found a woman had fallen from a bridge and collided with a heavy goods vehicle on the carriageway below.

“The woman was taken to hospital for treatment with serious injuries and remains there in a critical condition.

“Her next of kin have been informed and are being offered support from officers.

“The road was closed for a short period of time, but has since been re-opened.

A spokesperson from the air ambulance said: "Yesterday our critical care team was activated at 3.43pm to an incident in Hexham.

"We had a doctor and paramedic on board our aircraft and they arrived on scene at 4pm.

"Our team worked alongside the North East Ambulance Service to assess and treat a patient and the patient was taken to hospital by a NEAS road crew, accompanied by our team."
