Veterans inside a North East prison recently commemorated the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

On June 6 a remembrance service was held within the grounds of HMP Northumberland.

The intimate event held at the prison's memorial saw readings by a prisoner, the governor, and the lord lieutenant, Dr Caroline Pryer.

HMP Northumberland has long partnered with SSAFA, a charity assisting veterans in the criminal justice system.

A significant part of their support involves the Prison In-Reach service, contributing to various inmates' needs.

Close ties also exist between SSAFA and the Oswin Project, a local initiative providing inmates with mentoring and employment opportunities.

On her visit, Dr Pryer toured Alnwick House, the tailoring and engineering workshops, and the prisoner-run market gardens - managed by the Oswin Project.

Another of the project's schemes is Cafe 16, where Dr Caroline and others enjoyed a buffet lunch.

Cafe 16 uses kitchen equipment donated by the Carmichael Walker Trust, allowing prisoners to gain relevant qualifications and experience.

Dr Pryor said: "It was an exceptional morning.

"I was hugely humbled to talk with prisoners, volunteers and staff, remembering the courage, resilience and solidarity of D-Day and seeing similar support for prisoners at HMP Northumberland."
