A MAN shared the history of radio transmitter equipment he came to learn was used in the D-Day landings.

Stuart Armatage, from Humshaugh, began collecting equipment used in the Second World War several years ago and discovered a cart he had previously used for transporting items was in fact a radio cart used in the D-Day landings in Normandy in June 1944.

Known as the Handcart Wireless No. 1 Mk.IV, it was specially developed for communications during beach landings.

Stuart explained: "In the 1950s, the cart was used in a builder's yard to move roofing materials.

"I then used the cart to carry gas welding equipment at my garage. Some years ago, I began collecting Second World War radio sets and equipment.

"After some research and a visit to the Royal Signals Museum, I noticed the very same barrow and was made aware of its role in the D-Day landings in France."
