Bus passengers in the region are said to save CO2 emissions equivalent to planting more than one million trees every year by choosing the bus over car journeys, according to bus company Go North East.
With more than 48 million trips taken annually aboard their buses, the carbon saving is said to be equivalent to a 1,500-mile line of trees stretching from Newcastle to Rome.
Go North East announced the figures to mark National Clean Air Day today (June 20).
Ben Maxfield, business director for Go North East, said: "It’s truly remarkable to reflect on the environmental impact of bus services.
"By choosing to travel by bus, our customers have collectively saved the same amount of CO2 that it would take over a million trees to absorb."
Bus travel is not only environmentally beneficial, but also cost-effective.
Go North East say they have worked to make travel cheaper, with fares reduced to £1 for those 21 and under, capped at £2 for adults, and free for concessionary pass holders.
These initiatives are thanks to collaborations with The North East Combined Authority, Nexus, Durham and Northumberland Councils, and the Department for Transport, according to Mr Maxfield.
He said: "Together, we’re planting the seeds for a greener future."
