A TEACHER won a national award recognising her as Teacher of the Year in a Primary School.

Robyn Derby, Acomb First School's Key Stage One class teacher and curriculum leader at Acomb, was nominated for the title by parent Caroline Watson.

The Pearson National Teaching Awards are an annual celebration of education, recognising the work of teaching communities across the UK.

Robyn won the bronze award for Teacher of the Year among five others across the UK.

Robyn said: “I am deeply honoured to have been nominated and to receive this award. Teaching has always been my passion and to be acknowledged in this way is amazing.

"I am grateful for my fantastic students, past and present, who have allowed me to be a part of their educational journey. This award is not just a reflection of my hard work but also a testament to the support and encouragement I have received from my colleagues at Acomb First School.”

She has worked at the school since September 2022. 

Caroline Watson explained why she nominated her. “I nominated Robyn because she is an amazing teacher and has a special bond with each and every one of the children within her class," she said. "Her knowledge of the curriculum is second to none and she demonstrates inclusive practice at all times. She is kind and caring and she is a brilliant storyteller. The children love her.”

Headteacher Hannah Williamson said: "This is a major achievement as it is a national award which recognises excellence in teaching. It is wonderful that Robyn has been awarded this to recognise her fantastic teaching skills. Our children benefit from Robyn’s care and commitment every day. 

“I am exceptionally proud that Robyn has been recognised in the Pearson National Teaching Awards. We are very lucky to have Robyn as part of our team. She is an absolute asset who goes above and beyond every single day.

"Her fantastic teaching skills do not only impact very positively on the children that she teaches but also on other staff in our school. She regularly gives her time to support others with their teaching. Robyn is the most caring, kind and hardworking teacher who puts the children at the forefront of everything she does. A very well-deserving winner.”
