Slaley's Women's Institute has installed a community noticeboard to commemorate its 100th anniversary.

The idea to gift a noticeboard to the parish was born during last year's centennial celebrations, with the aim of providing a more accessible information point for the community and visitors.

Previously, noticeboards were located only inside a shop and the Commemoration Hall, hidden from view whenever these establishments were closed.

The new noticeboard now has a prominent position in the garden of the Slaley Community Shop, which gave its support.

Catherine Myers, president of Slaley WI, said: "With the support of the shop over the last year, we were able to add to our project fund by holding pop-up cake stalls there and we’ve had some generous donations from the shop itself, Slaley Parish Council through its community fund, as well as private benefactors."

Crafted by Emerson Joinery using durable hardwood from the mahogany family, the board withstands the weather conditions of Slaley,

Ms Myers said: "We sit on a high ridge and winds from the Southwest are particularly vicious.

"We designed it to reflect our 100-year history, so it is a traditional design on the front but with a modern chalkboard on the back for the shop's usage.

"When scones are on sale on a Saturday morning the chalkboard message will remind customers to get the cream and jam!

"Working with the shop, the displays will be changed on a regular basis.

"The village benefits from a regular monthly Slaley News publication, but this can help with more spontaneous events and information on local organisations and trades."
