Ex-military employees have spoken about what it's like to work at train operator Northern.

Speaking ahead of Armed Forces Day, which took place on June 29, Rob Brown, an on-board systems service technician and active army reservist, described the railway as 'a home away from home' for people who have served in the military.

Mr Brown also serves as deputy vice chair of Northern’s Armed Forces Group.

Lee Walker, a conductor based in Newcastle, left the Army in 2001.

He said: “On the railway you find the same sort of people and they give you uniform, training, structure and a purpose.

“You’ve got to be on time, on task and following a routine, just like you do in the army.

“I would definitely recommend it to people who have left the military, it’s a great industry to work in."
