An open gardens event and a textile and art exhibition in Corbridge have raised thousands of pounds for an assisted living home.

The Corbridge Charity Open Gardens saw visitors explore 16 gardens and soak up the sunshine at the event last month.

Tea and cakes were served by volunteers at the Corbridge Community Hub as 400 visitors helped to raise £3,000 for the Charlotte Straker Project and the Corbridge Community Partnership.

Marketing and fundraising manager Sally Urwin said: "It was an incredible afternoon with an amazing community atmosphere.

"I'd like to express my deepest gratitude to all the gardeners who worked so hard to get their gardens ready for the day, everyone who helped set up, serve refreshments, manage the ticket desk, clean up, and organise the event.

"It surpassed all our expectations, and we're thrilled to have raised so much for our Community Respite Care Bed and the Corbridge Community Partnership.

"We’ll definitely be back for 2025."

Additionally, the Corbridge Textile and Art Exhibition at St Andrew's Church celebrated local creativity.

There was quilting, weaving, knitting, crochet, art, basketry, lace making, embroidery, rug making, floral art, calligraphy, soft toy making, pottery, photography and soap making on show.

One visitor described it as a "wonderful exhibition" with "so many talented people."

Another said it was an "absolutely beautiful experience", while another said it was "well worth the journey" they had made from Birmingham.

Berenice Groves, chair of the trustees at Charlotte Straker, said “This two-day event not only showcased amazing work, but also raised a fantastic £2,336.

"The funds will be shared between our community respite care bed at Charlotte Straker House and Corbridge Church.

"Our residents, John, Margaret, Joan, and Birgit, had a special treat with a visit to the exhibition and they marvelled at the creativity of local crafters.

"Birgit was even thrilled to see two of her own paintings displayed. Thank you so much to the organisers, St Andrews Church and all the talented crafters who took part in the festival. It was a huge success.”
