A FAMILY-friendly event will fundraise for a local hospice charity.

The Wylam 5K Fun Run was the brainchild of part-time running coach, Luke Hilliard, who wanted to raise funds for Tynedale Hospice at Home while doing something he loved.

The family-friendly event, which also welcomes dogs, will take place on Friday, July 19 at 7pm with the registration point opening at 6.30pm for runners at The Ship Inn.

He chose the route in Wylam after noticing there was a limited number of runs in the area, especially considering the beautiful locations on offer.

Luke, from Wylam, said: "It's flat, it's fast and very simple for all people involved. It starts at Hagg Bank Bridge, goes along Waggonway, through Wylam and turns around just past Stephenson's cottage. Then it finishes back at the bridge and people can go to The Ship Inn in Wylam for drinks and food."

He added he's keen to keep the event going in the future. The registration fee is £7.

"It's a really good cause, I think anyone who's had to use a hospice knows how tough it can be on friends, family and relatives. It promotes fitness and active wellbeing as well as a good community spirit."

Matthew Crowe, fundraising and events officer for Tynedale Hospice at Home, said: "The Wylam 5k is a fantastic community event and we feel very fortunate to be a part of it for a second year.

"Luke is a valued supporter of the Hospice and we look forward to cheering the runners on as they cross the finish line. These events really do make a huge difference and enable our care services to continue reaching local patients and families in need of support.”

Another fun run will be organised near Christmas with a different course.

"I think we'll need to mix it up again, but it would be good to do a hilly run which would be more of a challenge," Luke added.

Runners can sign up through the Tynedale Hospice at Home website or at https://racebest.com/. People can also sign up on the day.
