Four charities from the area have enjoyed surprise donations following the closure of Wall Carpet Bowls Club in Hexham.

After 38 years, the club has decided to wind up due to a decline in numbers and the impact of Covid.

The charities who have had donations include Tynedale Hospice at Home, Macmillan Cancer Support, Great North Air Ambulance and Core Music.

Club chair, Chris Jones, commented on the decision, saying: "Following the successes and failures over the years of matches and competitions with clubs in the area, such as from Slaggyford to Otterburn, it has become impossible to match our ambitions with our ability.

"Although we all hope that none of us become customers of our chosen charities in the future, accumulated funds and sale of our equipment allows us to have a small impact in the area, and by supporting Core Music, leave a wider legacy for both young and old who come after”.

“In rural areas such as ours, we never know when we may have to call for aid of such vital organisations and we are pleased to support them”.

Reflecting on club memories, Mr Jones mentioned: "Many cups of tea have been drunk, cakes eaten and raffle prizes won, both at matches and club socials.

"We thank all who have contributed".
