Archer Conor Hall urged Team GB to bounce back quickly from a disappointing start to their Olympic campaign.

Hall, who attended Campbell College, got the privilege of being part of the first group of six athletes to step onto the field of play for Team GB at Paris 2024.

The ranking round, a traditional pre-Opening Ceremony curtain-raiser, is neither televised nor ticketed and involves all 128 archers shooting 72 arrows each on the same field, with total scores producing seedings for individual and team competition.

“I don’t think anything can really prepare you for standing out there and realising you’ve become an Olympian after shooting those first couple of arrows,” said Hall.

“The nerves did come from somewhere, I don’t know where, but it’s just a massive experience and a huge stage.”

Against the stunning backdrop of Les Invalides, a complex of buildings that includes Napoleon’s tomb, Hall finished in 46th place with a total of 652, a performance that fell short of his expectations.

Alex Wise was the leading British man, ending on a score of 664 to finish in 27th place, with Tokyo Olympian Tom Hall landing in 51st with a total of 645.

It means Team GB have missed out on a place in the mixed team event, with only the top 16 nations entering the draw for that one.

They will be seeded 11th out of 12 teams for Monday’s men’s team competition and will face Chinese Taipei in the first elimination round.

“I didn’t really know exactly where I was while I was shooting but I wasn’t as high as I would have liked to have been and where I’ve been throughout the year,” said Hall.

“We’ve all got used to looking at the leaderboard and seeing ourselves in the top page and this time it didn’t quite happen like that.

“Going into the team matches, that’s behind us and this matters to a certain degree, but we know we’re better than what we did today.

“Alex got a pretty good score but it’s still not what he’s been doing recently, I know he’s better than he did and so am I and so is Tom, so we’re going to head out to the finals field and give it everything.”
