Two schools have received a national award for their efforts in fostering mental wellness among students, educators, and families.
Broomhaugh CofE First School of Riding Mill and Corbridge CofE First School have both been awarded the Bronze Level School Mental Health Award by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools.
A host of initiatives have been implemented at the federated schools to nurture the mental health of the school community, including the creation of a sensory garden, equipped with vibrant plants and an outdoor piano.
A bereavement drop-in to support those experiencing loss and a playground buddy system, manned by specially trained children looking out for their peers, is also in place.
Executive head teacher Suzanne Hart said: "The wellbeing of our children is our first and greatest priority – our federated vision is ‘be the best you can be’ and we know it’s not possible for children or adults to achieve that if they have any issues with their mental health.
“We want our schools to be warm, welcoming and inclusive places where everyone gets every bit of support they need to flourish – and we’re delighted independent experts have concluded that we are achieving that.”
