A PAVEMENT deep clean lasting up to 10 days will conclude the high street improvement works.

The Hexham High Streets Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) brought more than £3.5m in investment to revitalise the town centre by resurfacing roads, installing wider pavement slabs to allow outdoor seating and providing on-street parking.

Northumberland County Council, in partnership with Historic England, delivered the HSHAZ improvement works which were completed in May.

Northumberland County Council Highways Construction Team issued a letter on July 31 to residents and businesses announcing a 'post-construction deep clean' of the new paving in Priestpopple, Cattle Market and Battle Hill.

The letter said: "This essential work will start on August 6 for up to 10 days from 5am through to 10am, when the street is generally quieter."

The team will begin at the County Hotel and move west. Once they reach the Eastgate junction, temporary two-way lights will control car access and create a safe walkway.

The cleaning team will move to the north side of Battle Hill once the south side is finished and continue with traffic lights until the pavement widens again on Priestpopple.

"If you have any furniture outside your building then we will need you to remove this prior to the cleaning commencing in that section. Site staff will be on hand if you have any queries.

"We will keep disruption to a minimum throughout this work and thank you for your patience during the final stage of this important regeneration project," the letter added.

Mayor of Hexham, Derek Kennedy, said: “As Northumberland County Council finalise the Heritage scheme, a final deep clean of the area including the pavements will take place over a few days starting on August 6 for a few hours each morning when the street is quieter.

"We received good feedback from the public on how the look and feel of the area has been improved. Businesses such as the Coach and Horses and Vercelli have seating on the street and it helps make the place look alive. Planting and public seating are in place. It’s helped breathe new life into Hexham," Cllr Kennedy added.
