In a landmark event for Blanchland, Premonstratensian canons or white monks, will be returning to the Blanchland Abbey.

The Very Rev Thomas Swaffer, Prior of the Premonstratensian Canons in Yorkshire, along with a second canon, are bringing a group to celebrate a Premonstratensian mass in the Blanchland Abbey for the first time since its dissolution in 1539.

Known in the area as white monks due to their white habits, the monks have a strong connection to the village.

Blanchland’s name is believed to originate from their white (French blanche) habits.

Notably, the village is built on the original abbey footprint and the revered White Monk Tea Rooms maintain their moniker.
