WE asked our readers whether it was time to ditch school uniforms and let children wear their own clothes to school.

Here's what they said.

Tania Lowdon said: "Uniform is a good idea but overpriced clothing because it’s got a school logo on is ridiculous. Bring back an iron-on badge for a pound."

Facebook page Rosie's Hexham Corner said: "No, uniforms are all the same. Some kids don't have decent clothing to keep up with peers."

Dawn Mole said uniforms shouldn't be scrapped but be 'basic shirts, polo shirts, trousers and skirts that you can buy from a supermarket'.

Mark Dempster said: "I always hated uniform, but as an adult I can see the point - it avoids kids being singled out because their families can't afford the latest fashions. What's needed is for school uniforms to be simple and cheap. I remember that there was only one shop in town that sold mine, so they were able to charge twice as much as what uniforms for other schools cost."

Tina Gair added: "Absolutely not. But start with abolishing the pricey logo jumpers/sports gear/Jackets which can only be bought in schools, and bring back sew-on badges so parents can buy affordable uniform elsewhere."

Craig CJ Jones said: "Throughout your life, certain jobs demand that you wear a uniform whether it be PPE on construction sites to solicitors wearing suits. Get them used to it as the concept never goes away, one way or the other."
