A £3.8 million project is set to roll out 5G coverage across the Borderlands region.

The Borderlands Partnership has secured funding from the Department of Science, Innovation, and Technology (DSIT) to implement the Borderlands 5G Innovation Region Programme.

The programme is aimed at enhancing wireless coverage and smart technology in five locations, thereby exploring the potential of 5G to boost the rural tourism sector.

The selected sites include The Crook Inn on the Destination Tweed trail, Kielder Castle and Water, Stranraer Marina, The Sill near Hadrian’s Wall, and Windermere Ferry.

AWTG Ltd has been appointed as the supplier for the project.

Abbey Alidoosti, CEO of AWTG, said: "With the joint efforts of AWTG and the Borderlands Partnership, we're bridging the digital divide, bringing the future of connectivity to England and Scotland.

"This transformation will help boost tourism and foster community growth through wireless connectivity and digital advancements."

The Borderlands region, which is home to two world heritage sites, two national parks, and several long-distance walking and cycling trails, attracts more than 63 million visitors annually.

However, the rugged landscape and rural nature of the region have historically posed challenges to infrastructure development, restricting investments in connectivity.

The introduction of advanced wireless technology at these visitor locations is expected to support service delivery, safeguard workers and the public, foster new service development, provide enhanced information for visitors and locals, and enable environmental monitoring.

The initiative also aims to improve connectivity during the peak summer months and boost the tourism economy.

Survey work has already commenced, with the Borderlands 5G Innovation venues expected to start benefiting from the investment by early next year.

Councillor Jonathan Brook, leader of Westmorland & Furness Council and Borderlands Partnership Board Co-Chair, said: "Improving digital infrastructure, supporting innovation and encouraging sustainable tourism are top priorities for the Borderlands Partnership.

"I am proud that Borderlands has been selected as one of the UK’s ten 5G Innovation Regions."

Councillor Euan Jardine, leader of Scottish Borders Council and Borderlands Partnership Board Co-Chair, added: "The Borderlands Partnership is targeting transformational and inclusive improvement, creating opportunities for all businesses and communities across the region to thrive."
