Thousands of runners descended upon Kielder Reservoir last weekend for the 14th Kielder Marathon.

The sun was shining over Kielder as more than 3,000 people donned their trainers to compete in one of five events - the marathon, half-marathon, 10K, Gravel Duathlon and the junior races.

This year's winners of the male and female marathons were Ricky Lightfoot, of Ellenborough AC, and Jane Hodgson, of Morpeth Harriers, with times of 02:34:24 and 03:16:05.

Pudsey & Bramley AC's Callum Hanson was the first male to cross the line of the half-marathon, finishing with a time of 01:14:29. Luisa Hartley was the female winner, completing the half in 01:30:39.

Steve Cram, founder of Events of the North which delivers the marathon, said: "The rain stayed away and we had great conditions for the runners. Looking at the times at the front of each field, it's clear that many of them took advantage of that. The course and our army of volunteers coped really well with a record number of participants.

"After running the 10K here yesterday, it was very fitting that Mayor of the North East Kim McGuinnes was on hand today to present prizes to our winners, supporting an event that both showcases such a wonderful part of our region, and also helps folk to get active."

One of the runners was in for a surprise when she crossed the finish line of the half-marathon as her partner dropped to one knee and proposed.

The Kielder Marathon is known as 'Britain's most beautiful marathon' as runners traverse the incredible surroundings of the forest.

It is hosted in conjunction with Northumbria Water, Places Leisure, Northumberland County Council, and Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

County councillor Jeff Watson, member for healthy lives, said: “This weekend offers something for everyone—from junior races to the half and full marathon events.

"This celebration of athletics highlights the incredible endurance and passion of runners while also welcoming families and individuals of all ages to experience the beauty of Kielder.

"It’s a fantastic opportunity for our local businesses, and a proud moment for Northumberland as we showcase our community spirit and Northumbrian hospitality."
