Northumberland residents can get a free tree through a Northumberland County Council scheme.

Residents, schools, community groups, town and parish councils, charities, and businesses are encouraged to take advantage of the project by grabbing one (or more) of the 15,000 tree saplings that are up for grabs.

It's part of the council's efforts to make the region cleaner and more environmentally friendly.

Council leader Glen Sanderson said: "As part of our environmental policy and our climate change action plan, we are dedicated to boosting our natural environment and reducing emissions.

"We hope that everyone will get involved in tree planting. This is a way that you can become involved to help us on our way to net zero and enhance the natural environment that we all treasure.

"Not only is this a great way to help the environment but it also brings communities together, provides educational opportunities, and improves the health and wellbeing of the people in our county."

There's a wide variety of species available to choose from depending on the size of garden or whether the request is coming from an organisations.

Species include Copse, Wild Privet, Crab Apple, Silver Birch, Wild Cherry, Native Harvest, and English Oak.

Last year, more than 10,000 trees were distributed through the scheme.
