Hexham MP, Joe Morris probed the Prime Minister on provision for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) during Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday.
Mr Morris said that ‘frightened’ families have to ‘fight tooth and nail’ or travel extremely long distances to ensure their children get the correct support and education in rural areas in the North East of England.
In response, Keir Starmer said that the government had a ‘duty’ to look into the issues raised by Mr Morris.
“This (question) reinforces that SEND provisions are important and were a failure of the last government, particularly in rural communities,” said Mr Starmer.
“It's a really important issue. We have a duty now to pick this up and to ensure that all children with SEND receive the right support to succeed in their education and we will continue to do so.”
