People in Northumberland are being encouraged to volunteer for the UK's 'biggest' food donation drive.

The 12th annual Tesco Winter Food Collection is scheduled to take place from November 28 to November 30.

Tesco's charity partners, Trussell and FareShare, are calling on individuals to join the in-store events and make a difference.

With 'record levels of need' this winter, the charities are both providing a 'lifeline' to those who are vulnerable.

Customers will be encouraged to donate long-life food to support these charities.

The donations to Trussell will aid its network of food banks in providing emergency food parcels, while FareShare will use the contributions to support its 8,000 strong network of charities and community groups across the UK.

Trussell chief executive Emma Revie said: "We urgently need your help to make sure food banks can be there for people this winter and you can play your part by volunteering at the Tesco Food Collection."

Kris Gibbon Walsh, CEO at FareShare, said: "We know that the need for support often rises during the winter months, as people struggle to afford essentials like food and heating."

People can sign up to volunteer in their nearby Tesco store with FareShare or Trussell through their respective websites.
