Hexham: Horror tours to keep going after summer success

Helen Wearmouth set up Hidden Horrors Hexham in May, to share factual yet disturbing tales from the town's past.

Funeral celebrant Helen, from Hexham, is one of the town criers and hopes to grow the tours across various Northumberland towns.

I've entertained guests Hexham born and bred, others from around the country, and some from as far as the United States of America. Showing our beautiful town of Hexham to guests has been extremely rewarding, even though the tales are of its darker side.

"They've been so successful that I've decided to continue into the winter. This colder, darker season presents a different set of challenges, but also new opportunities.

"Torches are provided for all guests on our Friday evening tours enabling guests to shine on some of the secrets that lie await. Seeing the stunning Abbey glow at night is truly beautiful,  many of the guests have got some amazing shots.

"The evening tours have also proven to be even more atmospheric for the cruel and gruesome tales.

"The Saturday tours are ever popular with guests visiting Hexham. Many a week I have the pleasure of chatting to guests about the other activities and places to visit Hexham has to offer whether it be the Farmers Market, the various events hosted at the Abbey and of course the growing number of unique shops and eateries Hexham has to offer."

Helen will also be hosting the regular gruesome tour of Hexham on Hexham's Spook Fest on October 26.  Although the tours are not of a 'ghostly' manner, the five star rated tours discovering Hexham's gruesome side, will be an ideal addition to the special day before the Halloween celebrations begin at 1pm.
