Newcastle Airport is set to begin a £17 million runway resurfacing project.

The work, scheduled to occur at night with 'no planned disruption' to flights, will start on November 4 with completion expected in March 2025.

The project will see 32,750 tonnes of new materials laid and 1,267 runway lights replaced with energy-efficient LEDs.

The airport estimates this will reduce its carbon emissions by 87 tonnes per year.

Nick Jones, the airport's chief executive, said: "The £17 million project to resurface the runway will mark a significant milestone in the airport’s history.

"This investment will not only extend the overall lifespan of the runway and ensure we continue to provide vital connectivity for the North East region, but it will also support the airport’s future growth and our long-term sustainability goals."

Chris Wright, contracting director for construction company Tarmac, said: "Having worked in partnership with the airport’s teams for many years we recognise the importance of this significant investment programme and are fully committed to working collaboratively to achieve the programme’s goals."

The airport, which was recently recognised as the best in the world at the Routes World Conference, is planning to invest a further £3 million this winter to improve the departure lounge and retail outlets.
