THE town paid respects to those who sacrificed their lives for their country this weekend.
Remembrance Day on November 10 began with church services in Hexham and Hexham Brass Band performing at the Sele Park's War Memorial, before a parade from the Moot Hall to the memorial.
A service then took place at the War Memorial where mayor Derek Kennedy addressed residents and recognised Hexham's twin towns of Noyon in France and Metzingen in Germany.
Biographies of local servicemen, whose names can be seen on the War Memorial, were read along with a poem.
During the wreath laying, Hexham Abbey Choir performed Lament for the Fallen.
Serving members of the Armed Forces, Cllr Kennedy and county councillors laid wreaths alongside representatives of Armed Forces associations, police and ambulance services and community organisations among others.
Dr Tony Newton, 65, has presented the wreath at Hexham's War Memorial on behalf of the Royal Air Force for nearly 10 years.
He has now retired and Wg Cdr Crow, OC 19 Sqn at RAF Boulmer presented this year's wreath on behalf of the RAF.
Dr Newton, who is from Ovingham, said he was 'impressed' to see so many young people involved.
"I'm always so impressed to see so many people here and so impressed to see so many youngsters taking part. It's great to see them and it's really important we remember past conflicts, not least because of what's happening in the world at the moment.
"The service here is always impressive, having been part of it in the past and I'm always impressed with the organisation. It was lovely the rain held off and I have to say [Hexham Brass Band] were fantastic. I used to play in Hexham Brass and it's always nice to hear them play - it made today absolutely beautiful.
"It's hugely important to remember the sacrifices people made and that people in the Armed Forces and supporting services, like the ambulance service, still make. My daughter is in the ambulance service and the job they do is fantastic and hugely important."
