THE MP will visit a middle school to speak to pupils about the role Parliament plays in the UK.

Hexham MP Joe Morris said: "The climate crisis that we are currently facing is undoubtedly the defining challenge of our time. It is a cause that inspired me to get into politics, as a firm believer that political leadership can deliver meaningful change. It is now more important than ever that we protect planet Earth for our future generations.

"Last week as world leaders gathered for COP29, Keir Starmer laid out his ambitions stating how important it is that we step up to be global leaders in addressing climate change - a sentiment that I strongly agree with. While our country has already made impressive strides in the race against climate change with the UK being the first G7 economy to end the use of coal power plants there is still work to be done."

"The Prime Minister made it clear in his speech that this Government remains steadfast in our target to reduce greenhouse gases by at least 81 per cent by 2035 and will also honour commitments made by the previous government to provide climate finance.

"This Government was elected on a platform of change and that is what we hope to provide for the country with projects like Great British Energy, a publicly owned energy provider focused on slashing energy prices for the billpayer while cutting emissions and building the UK’s clean energy power.

"Last Friday (November 15) I met with North Tyne Climate Action Group in Bellingham where we discussed a range of environmental challenges, from sewage dumping in our waterways to the failures of smart metres in rural areas.

"I was delighted to be presented with some 300 paper windmills, each of which were inscribed with thoughtful messages about the climate hopes of local children who had participated in the group’s ‘Our Fragile Earth Project’. I plan to share these notes with Ed Miliband, the secretary of state for energy security and net zero.

"Thank you to those who attended my surgery in Bellingham last week and to everyone who has made it to an advice surgery so far. Being able to sit down with constituents, have an open dialogue and work together to achieve tangible results that improve lives really is the best part of the job and I am still thankful for the trust you have put in me to serve as your MP. I am looking forward to meeting more constituents over the coming months with my next surgery being this Friday in Allendale.

The dates for my December surgeries are as follows:

  • Throckley on the 6th from 10am-12.30pm
  • Cobridge on the 13th from 9.30-11am
  • Prudhoe on the 20th from 2-5pm

"If you are interested in attending an advice surgery, please email joe.morris.mp@parliament.uk with ‘surgery appointment’ as the subject line and provide us with a brief explanation of the issues you would like to discuss so I can come best prepared to help you.

"This week I was lucky enough to secure a fourth Westminster Hall debate for our constituency, this time covering the topic of tourism in Northumberland. I’d like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to the constituents who reached out to me with their thoughts, concerns and experiences which helped shape my arguments for both this debate and my prior debate on school transport in Northumberland. I hope to continue to develop the open line of communication between myself and constituents to help direct my work in Parliament and ensure that it accurately reflects the real issues for people living here.

"This week also marks UK Parliament Week, an annual event that helps to educate our young people on the work that we do. On Friday (November 22) I will be visiting Hexham Middle School to talk to pupils about the role that Parliament plays in the UK and I am eager to learn more about their own form of in-school politics from their student council. It truly is important to educate our children on being active participants in democracy, empowering them to recognise their ability to drive change."
