Northumberland County Council's Winter Services Team has outlined its readiness to manage road safety during the winter months.

The team has been focusing on keeping roads clear and ensuring public safety.

The council's 28-vehicle fleet covers thousands of miles across the county and is prepared to address various weather conditions.

Spreaders and ploughs are fitted to 4x4 vehicles, which are strategically placed around the county to respond to reports in areas difficult for larger vehicles to access.

All weather stations in the county are fitted with cameras and sensors, providing real-time data on weather conditions and salt levels.

This allows the council to respond to changing conditions and provide more reliable forecasts.

Councillor John Riddle, cabinet member for local services, said, "Our team is ready for whatever winter has in store.

"Northumberland’s landscape presents unique challenges, from snowy hilltops to milder coastal areas, and we’ve prepared our fleet and staff to keep roads clear and residents safe."

"This is a dedicated effort to ensure our communities remain connected and supported all winter long."

According to the council, here are the numbers:

- 105 staff members including managers, supervisors, and drivers.

- 44,000 tonnes of stockpiled salt.

- 28 multi-purpose gritting vehicles.

- Two specialised snow blowers.

- 1,600 grit bins and 200 grit heaps distributed across the county.

- Coverage of more than 3,000 miles of Northumberland roads.
