Trains running between Carlisle and Haltwhistle are currently experiencing a 'severe disruption'.
Northern Rail has reported that there is a fault with the signalling system in the Haltwhistle area which means all lines are blocked and trains are delayed.
Engineers are due on site to resolve the issue but disruption to services is expected until 10am.
If the problem persists, rail replacement services will be made available.
