THE town's traders urged residents to shop local this festive season.

Town centre businesses called for residents to support the local economy by shopping in Hexham for gifts and Christmas items.

Lifestyle store Grace & Purpose co-owner Laura Jackson said the 'lovely thing' about the small business community in Hexham is 'there is always something going on'.

"I think the town has vastly improved in the last five months we've been here. There's so much happening and it's really nice to see businesses have moved on to bigger premises."

"I fear if people don't shop local at Christmas, they're not going to shop local any other time.

Also, people should shop local because I think Jeff Bezos has enough money now," she added.

I think that's what makes Hexham stand out more, it's got such a strong, small independent business community."

Laura said some of their most popular Christmas gifts are jewellery items from Estella Bartlett, scarves, candles and reed diffusers.

Grace & Purpose has had its signage put up and will open upstairs for extra retail space in the coming weeks, showing the business has come on 'leaps and bounds', Laura said.
