A SCHOOLGIRL skier from the district has added more international honours to her fledgling career.
Corbridge’s Hannah Skinner spent the first two weeks of the new year competing in a series of races in Austria, which included slalom, giant slalom, and super giant slalom ‘super G’ events.
The Corbridge Middle School pupil, who only turned 13 in November, performed consistently to secure a third place in the slalom event and first place in a combined super G and slalom race.
The teenager’s success comes just three months after she won a gold medal in the U14 category at the Lowlands Championship in Landgraaf, Holland.
But her latest achievements highlight the remarkable progress she is making in a sport which is more than just a hobby.
Despite her tender years, Hannah is one of several talented skiers from the UK who spend 20 weeks of the year at a ski academy in Austria, where they train and compete, as well as continuing their education.
Hannah’s mum Katie said: “This is a fantastic achievement as Hannah is racing against some of the best skiers in the UK, alongside girls who have been selected for the Great Britain children’s squad, as well as competitors from other nationalities.
“We’re very proud of Hannah. She absolutely loves being out in Austria and nothing fazes her.”
Hannah is currently serving her second 20-week block in the central European country. The venture is supported by Corbridge Middle School, and with the support of approved tutors, the youngster carries out school work which is sent out for her.
Katie added: “Hannah was home for just six days over Christmas. She loves coming home but is always excited about getting back out there.
“Hannah has teammates in Austria who have become friends. Some of them have been competing in the Youth Olympics in Switzerland, and she has been watching their progress with interest.
“She wants to learn from the older competitors and follow in their footsteps. Her determination to continually improve has been recognised by her coaches and school teachers.”
Hannah is preparing for the English Championships which will take place next month. She is seeking sponsorship to support her training. If you can help call Katie on 07962 071 421.
