A popular series of events in the region are set to return later this year following a Covid-19 enforced break.
The Kielder Marathon - which was unable to take place last year due to the pandemic - is ready to return in October and has been designed to be the perfect target for anyone wanting to get active this summer.
Managed by Active Northumberland in partnership with Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Northumberland County Council and Events of the North, a number of events are set to take place including the full marathon, a 10k run, run-bike-run duathlon and also a number of junior races also.
“The last 18 months have been really tough for everyone and it’s very exciting that we’re finally able to put on a weekend of events at full capacity again," said Steve Cram, who founded the event and is also the race director.
"This is a big moment for so many, from event organisers like us and destinations such as Kielder, to members of the public whose physical and mental health has suffered, and charities and local good causes that have been unable to raise funds in the usual way.
“We can’t wait to welcome everyone back to the spectacular setting of Kielder Water and Forest Park.
"I think that this year’s event will feel even more special than in the past, if that is possible!"
The marathon was created back in 2010 and sees the route follow a course across Kielder Water and Forest Park, with the event having grown to two days of competition in recent years, with both thousands of runners and spectators again expected this year.
“You don’t have to be a marathon runner to take part in the weekend of activities," explained Mark Warnes, chief executive of Active Northumberland,.
"There is a range of events from the 10K, to shorter junior runs, and a team run-bike-run event, as well as the half and full marathon - so taking part is achievable for so many more people.”
The 2021 Kielder Marathon event is set to take place on the weekend of October 2-3.
Bookings to compete in any of the races is now open, with more information available at www.kieldermarathon.com.
