Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali looks set for a hefty ban after admitting to betting on AC Milan matches during his time in Italy.
The 23-year-old midfielder, who signed for the Toon for £55m during the summer, admitted on Tuesday to making bets on Milan to win games, in a hearing at the Italian Federation in Turin.
According to FIFA Code 26, conduct such as this can see players face up to a three-year ban from worldwide football.
Fellow Italian midfielder Nicolo Fagiolo was served a seven-month ban for betting on games, although he self-reported himself, while Tonali did not.
Brentford star Ivan Toney was banned for eight months back in May and won't return to Premier League action until January 2024.
It is unclear if AC Milan were aware of Tonali's self-proclaimed addiction when selling him to Newcastle during the summer, although it has been reported elsewhere that he kept his betting a secret.
The midfielder's help in the investigation suggests that his ban will be a lesser one, although it seems clear at this stage that Newcastle will be without their marquee signing for much of the 2023/24 season.
After some superb recent form, the news comes as a significant blow to Eddie Howe's side and their hopes of a positive season both domestically and in the Champions League.
Newcastle United said: "Newcastle United can confirm that Sandro Tonali is subject to investigation by the Italian Prosecutor's Office and Italian Football Federation (FIGC) in relation to illegal betting activity.
"Sandro is fully engaging with the investigation and will continue to cooperate with all relevant authorities. He and his family will continue to receive the club's full support.
"Due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to offer further comment at this time."
