Newcastle United's hopes of reaching another Carabao Cup final were quashed as they lost on penalties against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.
Callum Wilson's individual effort had put Newcastle in front but Kieran Trippier's late mistake allowed Mykhailo Mudryk to equalise in stoppage time.
The England full-back then put his penalty well wide with Chelsea finding the net with all four of their efforts before Matt Ritchie's effort was saved to send the hosts into the final four.
Eddie Howe's side had already defeated Manchester City and Manchester United en route to the quarter-finals but were dealt another tricky tie against Mauricio Pochettino's Blues in London.
The Toon welcomed Sven Botman back into the starting 11 after his spell out injured, but also lost Anthony Gordon and Emil Krafth to injury during the 90 minutes.
Howe will feel aggrieved that Chelsea weren't down to 10 men within two minutes after Moises Caicedo's horror challenge on Gordon only earned him a yellow card.
Conor Gallagher curled a superb effort off the crossbar for Chelsea before a breakaway saw Newcastle take the lead in comedic circumstances.
A slack pass from Levi Colwill gifted Wilson possession and the England striker, who was all on his own, ran straight at Thiago Silva and Benoit Badiashile.
After bumping his way past the Brazilian, young Badiashile looked to have mopped up the situation but an awful touch allowed Wilson back in, and he curled into the top corner for 1-0 on 16 minutes.
Chelsea pushed for an equaliser and Raheem Sterling thought he had found it when his shot beat Martin Dubravka, only for Bruno Guimaraes to block it on the line.
But then Trippier, who had replaced the stricken Krafth, gifted Mudryk the equaliser when his header fell short, with the winger curling past Dubravka for 1-1.
The England right-back has endured a tough spell with nightmare displays at Everton and Tottenham Hotspur and there was no surprise when he put his penalty well wide.
Cole Palmer, Christopher Nkunku, Gallagher and Mudryk all scored their penalties to send Newcastle out of another cup.
