A Northumberland Cricket Club has celebrated one of its members as he marked 40 years with the side.

Wylam Cricket Club held its VP day, where club legend Pete Smith was inducted as an honorary member, after being with the club for more than four decades.

Pete has recently been diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia, and the club were able to raise over £1000 for the charity on the day.

Club member James Cantrell said: "Pete has played for the club since 1984 and been a Vice President (non playing member) since retiring.

"We've raised over £1090 for the Lewy Body Society, which Pete is suffering from. Donations have come from the local community and from other local cricket clubs, which was very generous."

The club has been running since 1954 and has been playing in the West Tyne League for many years. However, that league is folding this year and all the clubs are moving into the Newcastle, Tyneside and Northumberland League.

The team plays in Wylam on a field owned by a trust, with around 70 Adult members and 90 Juniors.

James added: "The club is healthy and we work with the local girls football team (Wylam Rockets) to maintain the facilities.

"We have several dads and sons in club, some play in the 1s together, others in the 2s.

"The club has U13s, U11s U9s and All-stars, like every club in the region this is staffed by great local volunteers."

On the day, 16-year-old Marcus Wells captained Team Wells to victory on the day. The cup will be known as the 'Bairns Cup' and going forwards the two junior members of the club (1s and 2s) will captain annually.
